Question:  We have a Brittany that is three years old. About six months ago, he started to show some personality changes. When people walk by our house, he crouches and stalks them, eventually charging them while barking and growling. During these times, he has a strange look about him and a glazed look to his eyes. This seems to be a condition that comes over him at times, but is not with him all the time. Do you know what this is and what we should do?

Kim G., Kalamazoo.

Answer: Kim, this behavior sounds like the 'stalk and attack' syndrome. Without seeing the animal, I can not be sure, but these are the symptoms. An animal behaviorist or dog psychologist could better explain the condition for you. From my experience, this dog will, if it's not already, become dangerous and unpredictable and it needs to be put down.  Please do not destroy this animal on my prognosis alone. Seek the help of your vet.  Be very careful with this animal in the mean time.
