Question: I have just purchased a young Gordon Setter puppy. What can I work on with the pup now to help reinforce what I will be needing later when he is old enough to start field training?

Answer: Start running the pup off-leash in low cut fields when he is twelve weeks old. This is also a good time to introduce the leash and collar. On your walks, try to change direction every once in a while. When doing so, call the pup's name to get his attention. What you are starting here is a pattern of you being in charge of direction and speed when out on walks, no different than when you are out hunting. I would also introduce a dead bird at this age. Keep the pup on a long line so it cannot run off and chew up the bird, but allow him to play with it if he wishes. I find that by introducing dead birds at a young age, you can eliminate some of the retrieving problems that can come with a dog who has not been exposed to dead bird early. Not wanting feathers in their mouth or shyness about picking up dead birds can be cured before they start. If your pup will not pick up the dead bird, try enticing him by flipping the bird around and encouraging him to get it.
